#BYEBYEPAILLES started as #BYEBYEPAILLESMTL a petition to ban plastic straws and stir sticks in Montreal, Quebec. With broad support for this initiative around the country, and many restauranteurs making environmentally conscious decisions on their own, I founded a national campaign #BYEBYEPAILLES in order to unite the voices of those who agreed it was time to ban single-use plastic straws and stir sticks in our country for good!
Our goal was to have plastic straws in Canada banned by shining light on the support of this initiative to elected officials. In the meanwhile, the campaign aimed to encourage Canadians to say “no straw, please” when ordering a drink; to bring awareness to the environmental impact of plastic straws; to promote restaurants and bars that chose not to serve them; and to offer resources for establishments wishing to transition away from them. The petition garnered over 17K signatures. The Government of Canada has committed to banning harmful single-use plastics.
